What makes a kids birthday party fun?

We know that games are only half of what makes a kid's birthday party fun. Keeping children entertained at a birthday get-together can be a task, especially if you have a large group of kids to keep an eye on. Take a look at our party suggestions below to help you create an enjoyable event that your tot will remember for years to come.

Picking the perfect theme

Whether it's a pirate party, a fairy wonderland or a superhero celebration, picking a theme will make your child’s birthday feel extra special. Personalise the party with your little one’s favourite characters, animals, toys and anything else they love. Picking a party theme for your kid’s birthday will help you find the right decorations and help you plan some excellent themed games.

Keeping kids happy & safe

Here comes the chaos! Prepare for your party by ensuring that any sharp objects and dangerous items like cleaning products are put out of reach of children. Enlist some helping hands to ensure that the kids are supervised (especially if they’re very young) and don’t feel left out. Lastly, when playing party games, make sure that everyone has a chance to win a prize and that the prizes are suitable for their age group to avoid any mishaps.

Party food

The last thing you need is hungry toddlers. Cook up some party foods that include a range of diets (or pop to the shops!). Don’t forget to ask parents about any allergies, intolerances or preferences their kids might have. To encourage kids to eat the healthier options at parties, you could adapt the snacks to your theme. For example, carrot sticks could be a knight’s sword or tiger teeth. Go the extra mile by making a dinosaur pizza or fairy cupcakes to really put a smile on your birthday boy or girl’s face.

Party bags & favours

Wrap up the party with a slice of cake and some fabulous treats to go home with. Pick your party bag favours based on your themes and set a budget for how much you’ll spend on them. You could include small toys, hats and mini games along with some yummy sweets. Check out our guide on kids party bag fillers in our previous blog for some ideas.

Games and activities

Last but not least! Party games are the ultimate way to make their birthday feel special. Children will remember what a great time they had with their friends with the right games to play. When planning your birthday party games, consider things like the theme, the age of the children, and how much time they’ll take, so kids don’t get bored. Have a peek at our selection of unique kids party games below to throw an unforgettable party.

Indoor Party Games

Scavenger Hunt

Want to plan something a little more active than pass the parcel? Why not plan a scavenger hunt! Hide sweet treats and little toys around the house for kids to find, making sure that every child has a chance to find something. To make this game even more exciting, you could make a treasure map of where all the prizes are, this a great idea if you’ve got little pirates running around. Although you could have an outdoor scavenger hunt, it may be best to keep this game indoors so things are less likely to go missing, limit to a few rooms to avoid too much mess. We recommend having small toys as your treasure hunt prizes so that it keeps things fair and affordable, here are a couple of our selections:

Rainboh Teenie Needoh

These mini stress balls make the perfect scavenger hunt prize! Rainboh Teenie NeeDoh is a fantastic toy for helping kids relieve anxiety and destress. The smaller designs make them a great idea for little ones to look for during your scavenger hunt. These vibrant fidgets comes in a pack of 6, so kids can see if they can find their favourite colour!

You could also use the Needoh toys for a 'calm zone' at your birthday party or put them in your party bags.

Wildlife Yo-Yos

Kids will have an amazing time going up and down the house to find these Wildlife Yo-Yos. These adorable animal yo-yos are excellent toys for a scavenger hunt because of their little size and budget-friendly price. Playing with these yo-yos can help little ones develop their motor skills and concentration, so these prizes are both fun and educational. Purr-fect for an animal themed party.

Themed 'Pin the Tail on the Donkey'

Play a classic game with a twist! Create a background out of card that matches with your party theme, make a loose blindfold (ensuring it’s not too tight for the kids) and get the kids to place them on different parts of the scene. For example, you could create a Jurassic landscape with volcanos and huge plants and the kids will take it in turns to blindly put the dinosaurs on the rocks.

We recommend using Fiesta Craft’s Stickabouts for this pin the tail on the donkey alternative as these stickers can be used on any smooth surface in the house, allowing for a more creative party game.

Reverse Musical Chairs

Mix things up a bit with our version of musical chairs. This iteration is a more interactive game and involves making plenty of noise to keep kids entertained. Here’s how it goes:

  1. Half the room is given a musical instrument to play

  2. The other half dance around the room and decide when to sit down

  3. When all of the dancers are in their chairs, kids have to stop playing their instruments or they’re out!

Handbells toy

For the instruments, we suggest using small music toys such as Handbells or Castanets. If you’re planning games for a music themed party we have plenty of instruments for you to choose from. Check out last week’s blog on our New Musical Toys to jazz up your party.

Craft Games

If you’ve got an artsy toddler or you’re looking for something to calm the kids down at their party, these craft games will help you keep them amused and give you a bit of a break!

Jewellery Making

Enjoy a creative party activity and give the kids something to take home afterwards. All you need is some beads, charms and string to make little bracelets and necklaces. The perfect calming art game for your petite partygoers! Make things easier with the Jewellery Suitcase from Fiesta Crafts. This crafting box comes with buttons, jewels, ribbons and more to make your jewellery creation game a breeze.

Drawing Guessing Game

Mix creativity with cognitive skills with this guessing game! You’ll need a whiteboard or a piece of paper, some friends and a hat to pull out what you’re going to draw. You could have a theme like animals or foods to make things easy. Older kids may be able to write their own suggestions, but for little ones adults will have to write some simple words to draw. Each kid takes it in turn to pick a word from the hat, they then have to draw or paint the word on the board/paper with everyone else guessing. Whoever guesses correctly gets a prize! To make it fair, no one is allowed to get more than one prize when they guess the word right.

Junior Art Easel

Ideal for your drawing guessing game, this Junior Art Easel is a multifunctional wonder! Features a classic blackboard on one side and dry wipe magnetic whiteboard on the other. This art easel for kids includes a paper roll that can be fixed to the front for more ways to create. With 4 paint pots, 12 chalk sticks and a board eraser, children can explore their imaginations and creativity in so many ways!
