Makedo with this easy to use Safe-Saw! Cut the edge of the cardboard with this child-friendly saw. Made from sturdy steel, it has zero sharp edges so can easily cut cardboard (and not fingers).
To use the Safe-Saw, turn it upside down to punch holes as a cutting guide (if needed). Then, flip it back around and use the serrated edges to easily saw any thickness of cardboard, moving the tool back and forth as you go.

This requires a bit of strength to start it but then cuts through a cardboard box really well. A child can manage it. There seems no danger of cutting yourself.
