Wooden Building Blocks

First invented in the 1800s, wooden building blocks are a classic childhood toy that’s been a playroom favourite for over 200 years. Our collection of baby building blocks comes in all shapes and sizes, from creative click blocks and a pull-along brick cart to a wooden walker with blocks. We also have a set of eco-friendly recycled plastic blocks, if you’re looking for a lightweight alternative to wood blocks.

Building blocks toys help to sharpen young children’s hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, cause-and-effect learning, and knowledge of scientific concepts such as balance and gravity. They can also improve kids’ shape and colour recognition, while fueling their imagination and creativity.

FAQs

What's the difference between wooden building blocks and recycled plastic blocks for toddlers?
Wooden blocks like the FSC Certified options offer a traditional, natural feel and are often preferred for Montessori-style play, while recycled plastic blocks are lightweight, easier for small hands to grip, and more durable if dropped. Both develop the same core skills, but wooden blocks tend to feel more substantial and stack more precisely, whereas plastic blocks are often easier for very young children to handle.
Are sensory blocks worth choosing over regular wooden building blocks?
Sensory blocks like the FSC Certified Sensory Blocks add extra developmental value through different textures, sounds, and visual effects that stimulate multiple senses during play. They're particularly beneficial for babies and toddlers who are still exploring through touch and sound, offering richer sensory experiences than plain wooden blocks while still providing all the traditional building benefits.
What makes click blocks different from traditional stacking blocks?
Click blocks connect together firmly so structures won't fall over during construction, allowing children to build more complex and stable creations. Traditional stacking blocks rely on balance and gravity, which teaches different skills like spatial awareness and careful placement, but can be frustrating for younger children when towers topple over easily.
Which building block sets work best for developing early maths skills?
The Wooden Number Blocks are specifically designed for maths learning, combining building play with number recognition and counting practice. However, any varied set with different shapes like the Large Wooden Blocks or First Building Blocks also supports maths development through sorting, pattern-making, and understanding geometric concepts like symmetry and size relationships.
Do baby walkers with blocks provide the same developmental benefits as standalone block sets?
The Babywalker with ABC Blocks combines gross motor development (walking practice) with fine motor skills (block play), making it excellent for active toddlers who need movement. However, standalone block sets typically offer more pieces and building variety, so they're better for extended, focused construction play and developing concentration skills.
