What is Montessori?

Montessori is an educational approach that:

  • Involves hands-on learning rather than just memorising a text or copying from a board.
  • Is child-centred.
  • Uses special Montessori teaching toys, tools & materials to keep kids engaged in learning.
  • Encourages kids’ curiosity and gets them to ask questions.
  • Gives children the freedom to explore (but with clear expectations and set boundaries).
  • Respects that all kids are unique and learn in different ways.
  • Helps little ones develop their skills and become well-rounded individuals.
  • Promotes working together with a range of age groups.

In a nutshell, Montessori focuses on children as individuals, encouraging learning through play and nurturing their natural curiosity to help them prepare for the future. Montessori toys for babies and toddlers use these concepts to help them develop their physical and cognitive skills.

The key areas of Montessori

A great way to remember the key areas of Montessori is by breaking it down into the four Cs. The 4 Cs of Montessori are critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication.

Critical thinking

Encouraging kids to be curious, ask questions and delve deeper. Critical thinking in Montessori helps children to problem solve, analyse and look at things from multiple perspectives.

Collaboration

Learning teamwork skills and working with kids of all ages (as well as parents and teachers!). For example,  you could get your children to work together to solve a puzzle toy, encouraging cooperation and preparing them for the future where they will have to work with a range of people.

Creativity

Creativity in Montessori isn't just about paints and pencils, but allowing kids to use their imagination to solve problems. Montessori creativity involves out-of-the-box thinking and new ideas, encouraging your little innovators to think for themselves. This could mean using Montessori toys, such as blocks, to find the best way to create a tower without it falling.

Communication

Strengthening your little one's social skills, motivating them to express their thoughts and feelings clearly and encouraging active listening. Learning communication skills through the Montessori method can develop children's empathy, leadership, and public speaking skills, preparing them for their exciting futures!

Montessori toys use these 4 Cs to help kids learn and develop practical life skills. These toys are often made from natural materials and focus on a range of skills, based on the child's age and ability. They differ from regular educational toys as they encourage open exploration (within boundaries) rather than focusing on one specific purpose. With Montessori toys, kids can think creatively and experiment with different ways of learning.

Some examples of Montessori toys include puzzles, shape sorters, building and stacking toys, musical instruments and activity cubes. Find your new favourite with our selection of Montessori toys below.
