What is Australia Day?
Australia Day is Australia's official day of celebration, held every year on 26th January. It marks the country's long history and has been an important date for many centuries. On the 26th of January 1788, the first British fleet arrived on Australian shores. Later that day, the British flag was flown at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip.
It wasn't until 1935 that all Australian states and territories began officially referring to the day as Australia Day. In 1994, it finally became a public holiday. Presently, it has evolved into a day that celebrates the nation of Australia and the diverse people, environment and culture that inhabit it.
