What Is World Ocean Day And Why Is It Important?
Today is World Ocean Day. Not 'shore' what it is? Let us take a deep dive into this special day!
What Is World Ocean Day?
Every year on the 8th of June, World Ocean Day is celebrated. It's a day dedicated to honouring and celebrating our shared ocean. By coming together, we can raise awareness and bring about change to help protect our ocean. The ocean creates most of the oxygen we breathe, feeds us, cleans the water we drink and helps to regulate our climate... it's super important that we look after it.
Why Is World Ocean Day Important?
Some of the world's top leaders will soon be making important decisions that affect our oceans. One of these initiatives is the 30x30: protection of 30% of lands, waters, and ocean by 2030. To help these go to plan, it requires the support of you!
30x30 Initiative
The five main principles of 30x30 include:
- Support local conservation groups
- Work toward a more equitable and inclusive vision for nature conservation
- Honour the sovereignty of tribal nations
- Support private conservation
- Be guided by science
