What is International Firefighters' Day?
We celebrate International Firefighters' Day annually on the 4th May, which is also St Florian's Day! St Florian is believed to be one of the first commanding firefighters and is now the patron saint of firefighters.

- The oldest UK fire engine in service is still operational after 37 years!
- The symbol you often see on fire engines & firefighter uniforms is called the Maltese Cross. This symbol originates from when crusaders known as the Knights of St. John battled the Saracens with fire. Today, the Firefighter’s badge represents honour, courage and protection.
- You need a special licence & training to drive a fire engine in the UK. Firefighters have to get a Heavy Goods Vehicle licence and complete Emergency Response Driving courses so that they can hop in the red trucks,
- Fire trucks can carry up to 3000l of water & reach speeds of 80mph- no wonder you need special training!
