What Is World Ocean Day And Why Is It Important?
Today is World Ocean Day. Not ‘shore’ what it is? Let us take a deep dive into this special day!
What Is World Ocean Day?
Every year on the 8th of June, World Ocean Day is celebrated. It’s a day dedicated to honouring and celebrating our shared ocean. By coming together, we can raise awareness and bring about change to help protect our ocean. The ocean creates most of the oxygen we breathe, feeds us, cleans the water we drink and helps to regulate our climate... it’s super important that we look after it.
Why Is World Ocean Day Important?
Some of the world’s top leaders will soon be making important decisions that affect our oceans. One of these initiatives is the 30x30: protection of 30% of lands, waters, and ocean by 2030. To help these go to plan, it requires the support of you!
The five main principles of 30x30 include:
- Support local conservation groups
- Work toward a more equitable and inclusive vision for nature conservation
- Honour the sovereignty of tribal nations
- Support private conservation
- Be guided by science
How To Engage Kids With World Ocean Day
‘Water’ you doing to educate your children on the ocean? Kids learn best through play and we’ve got tonnes of ocean-themed toys and games for them to enjoy.
CollectA Sea Life Toys
Our beautiful CollectA Sea Life range is a fantastic way to raise awareness of endangered marine life species. CollectA is the largest manufacturer of toy animal replicas in the world, producing animals that are superior in both their design and delicate hand-painted detailing. From great white sharks and killer whales to crabs, turtles and fish, there’s something for every little ocean enthusiast to play with!
Real humpback whales are usually the size of a school bus, but this little fella measures in at a more modest 21.2cm x 12cm. This impressive humpback whale toy looks just like the real thing and features textured tubercles and ventral pleats, a dorsal fin, and a blowhole. Hand-painted in authentic humpback whale colours.
The Leatherback Turtle is the biggest turtle in the whole world - it can grow up to 1.7 metres and weigh up to 2,200lbs! Thankfully, the CollectA sea turtle comes in at a more lightweight 0.05 grams. Ideal for both kids and collectors alike, this turtle features an authentic-looking mottled grey hue, head, and front and hind flippers.
Great White Shark
This sea creature is far from scary! This fantastic Great White Shark toy comes with authentic-looking sharp teeth and an open jaw. Great Whites are the world’s largest predatory fish and can grow up to 6 metres long! This toy measures up at just 20.4cm x 9.5cm and can comfortably sit in the palm of your child’s hand.
Emperor penguins are the biggest penguins on the planet, they can also dive deeper more than any other bird. On average, they grow to be 115cm (the height of an average six year old!). Our toy emperor penguin stands at a miniature 6cm tall and is ideal for learning all about this fascinating endangered Antarctic bird.
Green Toys OceanBound Tide Pool Set
We also wanted to give the Green Toys Tide Pool Set an honorary mention! This bath toy is made in the USA from 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic. A sustainable toy, it’s made from plastic at risk of going into the ocean along coastlines in communities that don’t have a recycling infrastructure. Even the storage bag in this bath toy set is made from 100% recycled plastic bags.
