History

Green Arrow was built as a mixed traffic locomotive in 1936 to haul express freight and passenger trains.

In the Second world war the V2 class locomotives pulled some of the heaviest passenger trains ever recorded on Britain's railways and earned a reputation as 'engines that won the war'.

Today, Green Arrow remains one of the most popular engines in the National Collection at the Railway Museum York, which is the largest railway museum in the world. Its permanent displays and collections illustrate over 300 years of British railway history.

The NRM archive also includes a fabulous collection of railway advertising posters charting the history of rail.
