Bigjigs Toys | Creating Perfect Playrooms Since 1985

Bigjigs Toys | Traditional Wooden Toys

Our Showroom at Bigjigs HQ

Bigjigs was established in 1985 by the current Directors of Bigjigs Toys Ltd. Initially only jigsaw puzzles were produced. All were lovingly made by hand: cut, painted and packed in a small garden shed and the house porch . A weekly weekend market at Covent Garden in London was the only sales outlet for the products and sales were brisk! Customers were delighted with what they bought and a demand was created by these people to purchase from us when the market was not open. These people gave us many ideas for broadening our offering and so magnets, wellie pegs , pencil holders, door plaques and coat hooks became a part of the range.

During the early 90's consumers were keen to experience buying by post. Bigjigs also became a mail order company, selling direct via a catalogue to anyone living near and far. The early little brochure spread the name and it became neccessary to extend the range further with products made by others both inside and outside of the UK. The catalogue was a success and from it retailers requested that we supplied to them on a wholesale basis. Shop owners were delighted with their purchases and the product sold through well. The very first trade customer was Alice Quarry at Oad Street Crafts near Maidstone - today, still an active account with Bigjigs Toys Ltd!

During the late 1990's other UK based companies had headed east as they struggled to come to terms with expensive manufacturing in the UK. Bigjigs too, had found difficulty in coping with manufacturing, numbers were increasing dramatically and skilled workers were at a premium. There was an urgent need to explore manufacturing possibilities in the Far East.

During the late 1990's a small wooden toy company , John for Toys of Canterbury was acquired. It came with a good order book to some major UK retailers and the justification for sourcing in south east Asia.

In 1999, Bigjigs imported it's first container. Even today , the factory that produced that first container is a supplier! Our contacts in the Far east added considerable credibility to the business, it gave us access to new manufacturing techniques, and to a remarkable array of wooden toys in general.

In 2002, Bigjigs purchased a well known wooden toy and gift wholesaler , Woodware, based in Skipton , North Yorkshire. The acquisition came with a loyal customer base that was keen to have access to a broad array of good quality product, sold in reasonable quantities, with a quick turnaround on ordering and delivery.

We have been delighted to fulfil the expectations of those retailers and maintain their custom.

Today, Bigjigs Toys Ltd remains a family owned and run business and occupies 40,000 sq ft of warehousing in south-east England. The company continues to supply a broad customer base of Toy and Gift retailers in the UK and western Europe in the very same way as those early days.. Supported by a loyal, dedicated and hard working team of staff, the Company strives to provide a increasing customer base with British designed wooden toys and gifts manufactured in a variety of UK, Eastern European and South-east Asian factories. The Folkestone offices are the headquarters of the Company and are supported by additional office for EU customers in Utrecht and Poznan. Bigjigs Toys USA LLP, based in Grantsville, Maryland fulfils the requirements of all U.S. based customers.
